My point is that with the subscription model, there are constant bug fixes and small stable feature updates, which we wouldn’t get if we had bought, say, LrC perpetual version 8 two years ago. Thomas Knoll explains it better in the following interview: So the developers would not concentrate on fixing the bugs of the older versions but just create some “great new feature” fuss (and possibly introduce fresh bugs) in the next paid version
#Adobe lightroom alternatives upgrade
The problem with offering upgrade paid versions (Lr 5 to 6, 6 to 7, 7 to 8 etc) is that they would have to contain some “Wow” features in order for people to be incited to buy the new version. This applies to all other companies who now sell perpetual licenses, not just Adobe.
#Adobe lightroom alternatives software
So anyone who owns the old software will at some point need to buy a newer version. No company will support their old version of the software forever. But you would have to additionally buy Ps if you needed it for extra $. And if your computer/ operating system/ camera etc did not change for some years you would be fine with it. In the past you could indeed buy Lr 5 for $150 and then upgrade to Lr 6 for $75 and you owned the software. There are a lot of other Apps but they are inferior in one way or another to LrC, especially in the matter of DAM (organization)

There is a reason that, a lot of people who don’t like the idea of a subscription, still subscribe to Lightroom Classic: there isn’t really an overall good alternative, in my opinion.
